Chapter 8 To Follow Life’s Lead (1948).

 

Marie stood poised and sported a houndstooth dress with an ascot scarf that flowed and dropped perfectly just below her neckline. Her polite smile, accentuated by red lipstick with rounded corners, conveyed a benevolent charm as she welcomed guests to a teachers’ reception on Thursday evening, September 16. Parents and PTA members showed up in a record-breaking attendance to meet sixty-three teachers in the south wing of Lebanon High School. Parents were handed name tags to pin on their suit jackets, and teachers wore corsages.

 

Marie greeted each person as they walked in, and the total in attendance numbered more than two hundred. Once everyone was seated comfortably in the high school’s Little Theater, Marie stepped up to the podium and introduced herself as the 1948—49 PTA president. Her attentive audience listened as she next introduced the superintendent of the Lebanon schools, Mr. James King.

 

Mr. King’s speech emphasized the student population growth. They now had 950 grade school students, up from the previous year’s 622. The high school was no exception in that it had increased to 1,620 students. He also gave mention to Green Acres School, which would soon open. With an expressed appreciation for all that the PTA was doing, Mr. King recognized that they had their hands full. In all plausibility, Marie held her head high and nodded with a can-do-attitude.

 

It was a tall order, but she had successfully led a Red Cross fund drive as residential chairman and had managed the unit’s finances with the American Legion. She was accustomed to organizing events and assuming responsibilities. She knew that this PTA presidential term would experience many firsts in their membership pool. They now had room mother presidents not only in the two grade schools but also in the high school, along with a greater number of committees and chairman positions. And, as Mr. King had said, another grade school would open later that school year, which meant even more room mothers for Marie and her officers to lead. She knew she could lead the PTA. If only her father could also have known that.

The Sólhjarta Tournament

           

As the setting sun lit the evening sky and glistening fjord with brilliant shades of crimson fire, Brynhildr’s gaze wandered to the drakkar ship whose fierce blue dragon prow was etched with snarling silver wolves.

           

That is his ship. The fearsome warrior known as Sigurd Sea Wolf.

           

He’d caught her attention the very first day of the competition, for not only did he stand half a head taller than all the other warriors, his blue grey wolfskin cloak, shimmering in the summer sun, had given him the otherworldly air of a god. Deep blue gems glittered in his braided blond hair, pulled back from his rugged face and tied with leather at the nape of his corded neck. Lapis lazuli stones glinted in his golden beard, braided like his long thick hair. As Brynhildr had sat beside her faðir on the elevated dais to watch the competition, a sizzle of seiðr had shivered up her spine when he’d removed his wolfskin cloak and tunic.

           

Dark blond hair and blue tattoos covered his rippled chest, and for the first time in her entire life, Brynhildr had shared Astrid’s fascination for the spear-throwing event.

           

Even his spear had caught her attention.

 

The pale wood of his impressive weapon had been painted with blue swirling waves and silver snarling wolves, like his magnificent drakkar longship. And when he’d hurled the spear farther than any other competitor, a thrill of triumph had coursed through her veins, as if she had thrown the weapon herself.

 

That night, at the feast, her searching gaze had found him seated among the Sjórúlfar, the firelight in her faðir’s royal hall wreathing Sigurd’s wolfskin cloak in shimmery sapphire. He’d pierced her with fierce lupine eyes and seared her soul with a scorching smile.

 

All week long, she’d watched him. He ran more swiftly and swam more surely than the other warriors, as if he were indeed a Sea Wolf. Tonight, at the feast, her faðir would present gifts to the ten competitors—including Sigurd from Sjóborg—who had won the preliminary trials and would therefore advance to the next round of events in the Summer Solstice Tournament.

 

There would be a thrilling competition of three skálds, each vying for the prestigious title of Skáld of the Sólhjarta Tournament.

 

And after the bountiful feast, guests would dance around a bonfire beneath the stars.

 

Brynhildr’s legs trembled under her silk gown at the thought of being in the Sea Wolf’s arms.

 

If just looking at him sends shivers of seiðr up my spine, what will it be like to touch him?

 

A shudder of anticipation shook her whole body.

In the city of Rome, the Vatican, 1501

 

Lucrezia fell face up upon the gold brocade spread covering the bed, her spine sinking listlessly into the mattress while the room spun around her. Dust from the road still clung to her skirts, and her bodice reeked from days of travel. Her ladies tugged at her clothing, trying to free her from the fetid garments, but she waved them away.

 

She was weary. Weary from the jolting journey by horse, mule, and litter that had carried her home, but even more exhausted by the resistance her entire being had mounted against every mile traveled toward Rome.

 

Her arm failed her and dropped heavily onto the bed.

 

“Draw me a bath,” she murmured.

 

Once they had gone, she raised her hand and let it fall again upon the lavish coverlet, noticing that no dust rose from it. The extravagant decorations in her Vatican apartments were so new there had scarcely been time for dust to settle. She could still smell the dyes upon the rich velvets, tapestries, and brocades draped throughout the room and see the fresh-polished gleam of the newly crafted furnishings.

 

How beautiful it all was, this hastily assembled opulence, a whirl of deep colors and sumptuous textures arranged to please her and erase the memory of her final days within these very rooms, from which she had fled so suddenly only months before at the command of her father, His Holiness, Pope Alexander Borgia.

 

“I cannot tolerate your tears, Lucrezia,” he had said, never mind the reason for them. “Do you not trust us to know what is best for you?”

 

For the first time in her life, she had not immediately bent to his will, and he had sent her away to grieve behind the thick fortified walls of the fortress at Nepi in Lazio, north of Rome.

 

Even Cesare had neither stopped him nor wished to.

 

“You are not behaving like a Borgia,” Cesare had told her before turning his back as the litter carried her away.

 

The memory still stung now, despite that weeks later he had appeared at Nepi to reveal his plans and reassure her of his love.

 

Why had they not simply left her there?

 

Just as she had recovered her strength and begun to enjoy a life of solitude and reflection, the dreaded letter demanding her return had arrived. She had feared coming back to this Vatican chamber where she had suffered greatest anguish of her life, but her father had anticipated this and assumed that fresh surroundings would erase the horrifying past.

 

Not a trace of the former décor remained. Everything had been swept away like yesterday’s gossip and remade into a setting for her future.

 

From her position upon the bed, she felt as though she were gazing upon a magnificent theatrical stage newly assembled for a grand production. Indeed, she suspected she was about to become a player in some new drama for which she had not yet been given her lines.

 

The spectacular painting of Venus, nude and reclining within a gilded frame upon an easel facing the bed, strongly suggested the nature of the role she was expected to perform. The goddess’s slightly parted pink lips seemed meant to lure the viewer into enchantment, yet to Lucrezia they appeared mocking.

 

Curled beneath knowing blue eyes, those lips looked on the verge of laughter. What did they know that she herself had yet to discover?

 

The pope had offered no explanation for summoning her back to Rome beyond claiming that he missed her and that it was time for her return. Perhaps he intended to travel and required her once again to oversee his secular affairs within the Vatican.

 

She had fulfilled those duties before, even before her twenty-first birthday, astonishing cardinals who wondered aloud what madness possessed the pope to leave a mere girl in charge while he traveled. When he announced that Lucrezia would govern in his stead and that her signature would carry his authority on legal documents, one of the more malicious old cardinals had risen and exclaimed: “But Your Holiness, she possesses no pen!”

 

The entire congregation had roared with laughter at the crude and overused euphemism for the male organ.

 

Regardless of gender, the cardinals remained perpetually enraged by the pope’s determination to elevate his children to greatness. Yet after months of performing administrative duties with the ease and grace of a seasoned magistrate, they had come to respect her, or at least those particular abilities.

 

The rest they neither respected nor ever would. And for that she could not entirely blame them, for she knew much of what she had done was sinful and shameful. Still, she took the sacraments daily and knew what must be done to repent.

 

She confessed directly to God, of course, for she could never tell the truth to her earthly confessors, who knew perfectly well who she was despite the chain metal and muslin curtain separating sinner from cleric within the confessional booths.

 

If she told the truth, she would be punished. Not directly. No, they punished her in subtler ways, by taking from her whatever she most cherished while showering her with luxuries and splendid things until she became too intoxicated by beauty to protest what had been done.

 

This last crime, however, had been different.

 

She had refused to be placated by silver and gold, by entertainments and distractions, by promises of a radiant future if only she obeyed. She had refused, and for that she had been banished. Then mysteriously she had been summoned back.

 

Before leaving Nepi, she had consulted the fortress astrologer in hopes of discovering why she was being recalled. The old seer had charted the movement of the stars and declared, Jupiter will soon shine favorably upon you, bestowing honors beyond your dreams within mere months of your return.

 

How much had Father paid for such a prophecy? she wondered.

The gates of the commandery swung open and we rode into the courtyard. The brothers that had returned the day before were waiting for us, Rudolf included. My heart jumped when I saw him. He stood with his arms folded across his chest and an implacable expression on his handsome face. We reined in our horses and dismounted. The yard was quickly full of men, horses and the carts that rumbled in shortly after. Everyone was glad to be home. Wenno gave the order for two of the sheep to be killed and roasted for the coming feast.

 

I dismounted from my horse, but before I could lead her to the stables Rudolf approached me through the knot of knights and sergeants milling in the yard and the horses being led away. His aristocratic face was cold and he spoke through clenched teeth. ‘Clean my mail first – it is in the common room. Afterwards, make sure you attend to my horse.’ He leaned in closer until his face was only a hands-breath from my own. ‘And if you ever disobey a command from me again…’

 

He left the threat unfinished. My breath caught in my throat and I was only able to nod mutely. He turned away and returned to talk to his cronies, all of them knight-brothers in their early twenties. I wondered if that would be the extent of my reprimand.

 

Otto had witnessed the exchange. ‘You are white as the snow, Richard. What did your master say?’

 

I explained and he shook his head. He too had seen Rudolf complaining about my insubordination to Wenno. There would be more to come, I was sure of it. We led our horses into the stables, having to wait in line behind all the brothers and sergeants. Then it was time to pray. In the chapel, Priest-brother Berthold again thanked God for our victory against the Lithuanians. Afterwards, whilst the sheep were being roasted in the kitchen, I collected Rudolf’s mail from the common room used by the knight-brothers and sat cleaning it with vinegar and sand in a barrel set aside specifically for the task, before oiling it with goose fat. It was very messy and a job I hated, but I had no doubts about the reaction of my master if I didn’t complete it to his satisfaction.

 

The brothers were summoned to the refectory to eat while the sergeants waited and I finished cleaning Rudolf’s mail. The mouth-watering aroma of cooked meat drifted across the yard from the kitchen and, despite my belly rumbling with hunger, I knew I couldn’t eat with the pain in my throat. Finally, it was time to groom Rudolf’s horse, Rabe. I left Otto, Hinz, Gerhard and Emich, knowing that soon they would be able to stuff their bellies, before entering the stables, which were dimly lit and empty now after the earlier rush.

 

I began rubbing down Rabe. He was a magnificent black stallion that I knew well, but as I examined his skin, I noticed new wounds on his flank caused by my master’s spurs, as well as cuts on his neck from the whip. Every time I saw evidence of my master’s ill treatment, it made me furious. Maybe this distracted me from any approaching footsteps in the main stables until it was too late.

 

A noise behind caused me to turn and I caught a glimpse of Rudolf before strong hands grabbed me and thrust me into the piled hay in the corner of the stall. I tried to rise but he held me down. ‘You impudent little whelp. How dare you make a fool of me in front of the Master!’

 

He began whipping me with his riding crop, slashing at my back as I lay curled up in a ball, my hands protecting my head. I tried to rise but his foot on the small of my back shoved me back down into the straw. Despite having beaten the Lithuanian champion, I was still just sixteen years old, and no matter how hard I tried to rise, he kicked me down. My shoulders and back screamed with agony and I could hear him grunting with the effort as the blows rained down on me repeatedly. It seemed to last an age as Rudolf smacked and whacked me with the crop. It was as though he was demented, thrashing at me in fury with all his strength.

 

And then suddenly it ended. I lay heaving in pain as his footsteps receded, the door to the stables slamming after him. I remained on the ground for a moment until I was sure he had gone, before coming to my knees. I was bleeding and the lashing had ripped my back raw. This was not the first time I had been beaten – it had happened with Wolfgang and his friends in these very stables when I first arrived.

 

But this felt different. And, after everything that had happened, this was a humiliation like none other.

The Work of God

 

The Crimean port of Kaffa on the Black Sea

Autumn 1346 in the Year of the Dog

 

… “It’s a nomad custom,” Karia said. “They’re sealing the gers. The Mongols do that when the person inside has died or is seriously ill. I mean, can’t you smell it? It’s putrid.”

 

“I thought that was their latrines,” Paul said.

 

“No, I’d recognise that stench anywhere. It’s the pestilence,” Karia said, holding her nose. “Every day since I noticed it, I’ve walked the perimeter of the walls and imagined the entire city inside a subtle protective dome, a spirit cloak.”

 

“Will it work?”

 

“I hope so,” Karia said. “It should stop the pestilence from seeping into the city.”

 

“With the pestilence in their camp, they’ll be forced to raise the siege. I’m going to tell the bishop,” Paul said. “We’ll hold an open Thanksgiving Mass to celebrate.”

 

Thousands of relieved Kaffa citizens and courtesans, merchants and ministers, soldiers and sailors, crammed into the main cathedral square. The people’s joy was unbound. They cheered as the bishop mounted the podium, and she felt the gentle wings of peace descend on the congregation.

 

As if by accident, her hand brushed against a small pouch in her pocket. From it, she felt an immediate sensation of power and authority. It was from the Unbending Lord himself, Genghis Khan. For in the pouch was the white sulde of peace, the horsehair from the tail of his white stallion. The peace touched her spirit, and her spirit touched the peace. They were one, and she remembered the importance of that single white horsehair. It was a path to bring peace to the east and the west. 

 

In the distance, Karia heard creaking and groaning. She recognised the sounds. The Mongols were preparing a trebuchet.

 

“Brethren,” the bishop said. “You have all heard the great tidings. The Golden Horde is not so golden anymore. Their minds are swollen with their ambition, now their bodies are swollen with the pestilence.”

 

To great applause, he added, “This is the work of God. This is how He strikes down our enemies. This is His reward for our soldiers’ bravery, and our citizens’ courage, and above all, for our continuing belief in the Lord, that He will save us, and forgive us our sins.”

 

In the background, Karia heard the strings of a trebuchet being tightened.

 

“People of Kaffa,” the bishop went on. “We are the righteous ones. On this day, we move with the spirit of the times, for this is our salvation. May the Lord be with you.”

 

“And with you.” As the crowd responded in kind to the bishop’s homily, they heard the familiar tight snapping sound of the release of the trebuchet. Soon after, something flew over the battlements and landed in the crowd. Karia couldn’t see what it was. The Mongols often catapulted missiles like firebombs over the walls.

           

The people near where the projectile landed ran from it, leaving an open space in the crowd. But it was odd, because it didn’t set fire to anything. A similar object traced an arc over the battlements, and the same thing happened; the people dispersed and this time raised a hue and cry. Some folk edged back towards the packages to examine them, prodding them with sticks. Others stood by and pointed at them. Again, there were no flames. It wasn’t an incendiary.

 

Something was awry. Karia had an inkling what it was.

 

It happened a third time. A bundle glided serenely over the city walls and dropped into the crowd, this time on the ground below where she stood on the battlements. She expected it to explode.

 

But it didn’t. Neither did the other two.

 

The crowd scattered as if a pride of lions rampaged among them. There, in the middle of the main square, in the shadows cast by the great twin towers of the city’s Christian cathedral, lay three bodies.

 

Three human corpses.

 

And not just any old corpses.

 

The skin of the one nearest to her was blackened. The body was swollen with buboes as big as lemons. It was plague-ridden. Her inkling was right. But she could never have foreseen that the Mongols would do something as vile as this. While they packed to leave, Jani Beg Khan sent them a parting gift or two, or three or four. This devastating Parthian shot was made by an army that was expert in performing a similar strategy on the battlefield.

 

What flew over the walls of Kaffa that day marked the first time such an event had ever happened anywhere on Earth. In her experience, the air itself was benevolent. It didn’t mind what went through it nor what it carried, whether the smell of roses, a swirl of leaves, or a cluster of thunder clouds. On another day, the air could host the arc of a rainbow, a susurration of swallows, or the light of a star from the Heavenly River, the Milky Way. It was oblivious to the flight of a bird of prey or the ferocity of a lightning strike.

 

On that day, it all changed, because it hosted something it never had before. On that day, on the Crimean Peninsula, it rained disease. Death came out of the air and landed on the poor souls of Kaffa. Karia didn’t know if they deserved it. Nor did she think it was an act of God, because she didn’t believe God was anywhere near Kaffa that day. Evil occurred in the absence of God, and that conscious act of wrongdoing by the Mongols was evil.

 

During the rest of the day, the screeching sounds of the tightening and release of the strings of the trebuchet grew ever more eerie, ever more horrific, as scores of plagued cadavers arced over the city walls and landed on the roofs of the houses, in the bazaar, in the square, on the mosque, in the alleys, in the small gardens by the side of the church. One even conveniently landed in the cathedral cemetery.

 

The citizens of Kaffa watched as rotten bodies fell from the skies, crashing onto their soil, spreading their putrid smell in all directions. The Christians could neither hide nor flee from the havoc that rained down upon them. Despite her begging him not to, Roberto Spinola ordered the populace to handle the rotten bodies and dump them over the walls and into the sea. He’d repulsed them once, and sniffed a second victory over the Mongols, but all he could smell was the stench of the pestilence, and the awful fear that emanated from his citizens.

 

The next morning, Karia went to the cathedral square. It was shorn of bodies, though someone had sprinkled rose petals all over the ground. Karia knew who that was.

Chapter Six

 

Berlin, Monday, 28 August 1939

 

Arriving early, Freyja enjoyed the museum’s quiet, knowing the day ahead would be hectic. She climbed the stairs to the atrium’s first floor then strolled through the three exhibition salons of the Schliemann Collection. The sun shining through the tall windows formed rectangles of light on the parquetry. A faint scent of wax polish hung in the air.

 

The galleries were filled with ancient Trojan riches. She passed cabinets displaying anthropomorphic vessels, pottery, weapons, loom whorls and crystal buttons. She paused in front of four ceremonial axes, admiring the patterns on the green jade. Then she gravitated back to the main salon. It housed the Great Treasure of Priam.

 

She studied the trove within the glass display case. A copper cauldron and battered pan were the largest items. There were also a heavy silver vase and plate, gold cups, goblets, dishes and vases. The metal of some was corroded and black, the others lustrous. Added to the hoard were numerous silver talents, bronze axe blades and daggers, a few with ancient dirt still clinging to them.

 

Her gaze rested on the exquisite “Jewels of Helen”. The gold was not brightly burnished but retained its ancient patina. Four thousand years old. A Trojan noblewoman from the distant past once wore it. Freyja found the jewellery’s condition breathtaking after surviving millennia.

 

She often fantasised slipping on the arm-rings, donning the thin fillet headband and the neck torque, and threading the hair spirals through her own. There were many earrings from which to choose – twists, studs or tassels. Two multi-strand beaded necklaces also tempted her. Her fondest dream, though, was to wear the larger of the two headdresses. A magnificent shimmering tiara known as the “Great Diadem”. To experience her brow sheathed in a fringe of tiny golden chains, and feel the touch of long side tassels brush her temples and shoulders.

 

At the sound of footsteps, Freyja swivelled around. Darien Lessing crossed to her, wearing a khaki dust jacket, a satchel slung from his shoulder.

 

‘Such beauty trapped behind glass,’ he said, lingering on Helen’s Jewels. ‘Which of the two headdresses do you imagine wearing?’

 

She was startled he’d read her thoughts. ‘Why not both?’

 

He chuckled, placing his satchel on the table. ‘I presume Unverzagt rang you last night to say we must start packing the priceless items? The situation with the British is deteriorating. The foreign conference delegates have left Berlin in case war breaks out.’

 

‘It’s all very disturbing,’ she said. ‘Hopefully, cool heads will prevail.’

 

‘On all sides,’ murmured Lessing. He gestured to the display cabinet. ‘It’s particularly vital Treasure “A” is protected.’

 

‘Don’t reduce the magnificent exhibits in Priam’s Treasure to a boring letter of the alphabet,’ she said, studying the Great Diadem again. ‘The noblewoman who wore this headdress must have felt beautiful. Perhaps it was a gift from her husband. Certainly, she must have been a princess or queen to afford such riches.’

 

He studied her, head aslant. ‘Why, you’re a romantic, Fräulein. But I’m pleased you don’t think it was actually Helen of Troy who wore it. It’s dated from one thousand years before Homer’s Troy.’

 

She was annoyed by his condescension, hoping Herr Dietrich would arrive with the packing materials soon. Every German schoolchild knew about the Trojan gold and Heinrich Schliemann, the tycoon turned archaeologist who found it. He’d been inspired to locate Troy after reading about the lost city as a boy. He’d then amassed a fortune to fulfil his dream. But she also knew, disappointingly, the legendary King Priam never owned the items in the treasure that lay before her.
